HoR Directs Government Ratify ICC

The House of Representatives unanimously endorsed the proposal to ratify the Rome Statute of the ICC on 25 July 2006. The proposal was presented by Parashuram Meghi Gurung, MP of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML).

In the meeting of HoR, MPs of Nepali Congress-Democratic, CPN-UML and People’s Frond Nepal (PFN) fully supported the proposal stressing that Nepal government should accept the jurisdiction of the ICC to maintain rule of law and preserve and promote human rights of citizens and end impunity.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister KP Sharma Oli said that the Nepal Government will take necessary measures in this direction very soon. He also said that the government was committed to end impunity in the country by signing the Rome Statue. Oli said the government would ratify the Statute and become party to it after completing necessary legal procedures.

Subash Nembang, Speaker of the HoR, said that the decision of the House has uplifted the dignity of nation in the international arena, as human rights activists and human rights organizations have continuously raised the issue of ratification. 'It would be another viable means to end state of impunity, after the ratification of the ICC Statute' Nembang added.
